Hot “Dam”! Easy Home Ice Dam Prevention
Ice dams are what happens when water freezes in our clogged gutters, and the weight of it all starts to pull gutters out of the house! While not a happy experience by any means, it certainly can be easily prevented by a few quick tips which everyone should know. Often times, the heat from attics and home heating units reacts too much against the frigid air outside, which causes a temperature reaction that causes ice build ups known as “ice dams”. The three ways to easily stop ice dams from forming on our homes is to:
Clear leaves that are stuck in the gutters. This is by far the easiest method of prevention and is quickly solved by mesh metal gutter guards that are placed on top of the gutter holes. Many times, even after our gutters have guards installed, there will still be some pesky leaves stuck in there. To fix this, just grab a ladder and a quick leaf blower will take care of the job!
If our gutters are still clogged due to not having the mesh screens, then the best thing that we can do is to buy some Calcium chloride and pour it on top of our gutters to clear them up. As a natural ice repellant similar to common table salt, Calcium Chloride cleans out gutters without a hitch. It slowly works its way through the ice, just like how salt does this for sidewalks and driveways.
Properly ventilating on eaves and ridges is by far the most effective way that we can stop ice dams from building up because we are attacking the problem at its root. All that it does is slightly enter some cold air under the roof so that there is not such a huge disparity between the warm home and the freezing outside air.
