How to Prepare for Window Replacements

Replacing your windows can update the look of your home, increase its value, and help you save on energy bills. However, there are a few things you must do to prepare for the process — even if you’ve hired a professional. This can be more labor intensive than you might think. We’re here with some simple steps to follow prior to installation that will make the whole process easier for you and your family.

  • Clear a Path: Be sure to clear a path to your windows. Move all furniture out of the way, including tables and chairs, so your contractor can easily access the space. In addition, you’ll need to shift any lawn furniture or decorations outside the home, as this is an indoor AND outdoor process. If you’re having your second story windows replaced, be aware that your contractor will need room to utilize a ladder or scaffolding to complete the job.
  • Remove Decorations: Once you’ve cleared the ground surrounding the area, remove any wall decorations and/or window treatments. This includes nearby photos and paintings, blinds, window sheers, curtains, and valances.
  • Cover the Floors: Construction is messy! While your contractor will likely put down drop cloths, it is best to prep this yourself before workers arrive. This will ensure cleanliness and minimize the chance of damage.
  • Make Arrangements with Your Contractor: Many contractors will work to accommodate your busy schedule. If you won’t be home when the work is taking place, arrange a way for the crew to gain access to the property. Either leave a key under the mat or have a relative let the workers in.
