How to Clean Window Screens

How to Clean Window Screens

Ever try to gaze out a window with a dirty screen? It’s rather unpleasant to look at and makes things outside difficult to see. It’s important not to neglect your window screens. By regularly cleaning them you’ll extend their lifespan and have a crystal clear view through your windows. That’s why Fairfield County Exteriors is here with a step-by-step guide for cleaning your window screens.

Things You’ll Need:

  • All-Purpose Liquid Cleaner
  • Low-Pressure Hose
  • Microfiber Cloth
  • Towels
  • Vacuum
  • Water

Step 1: Remove Screens

First things first, start by removing your screens from the window box. If you’ll be working on multiple screens we recommend cleaning one at a time or labeling each screen as you remove it so you don’t mix any of them up. This can be as simple as marking up a piece of tape on each screen.

Step 2: Vacuum

Next, grab your handheld vacuum or a vacuum with a hand attachment — if you have a shop vac this will be more efficient. Lay out each screen flat on a towel and gently run the attachment over them. Over time dust, pollen, and stray spider webs can accumulate. This should remove most of the loose debris.

Step 3: Wash

Up next, you’ll need a bucket and a microfiber cloth. Fill it with a fourth of a cup of all-purpose liquid cleaner and a half gallon of water. Prop the screens up against your house or fence and carefully wash each side with the cloth.

Step 4: Rinse

Immediately after washing, take your low-pressure garden hose and rinse off each screen. It’s important not to let the soap dry.

Step 5: Dry and Install

You’re almost done! Next, use a dry towel to absorb any excess water and then allow the screens to air dry. Once the screens are fully dry simply return them to the window box and enjoy!

Pro Tip: Repeat this process at the beginning and end of each season for optimal results.
